Language and Literature English

Studies in language and literature are designed for students from a wide variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds who have experience using the language of the course in an educational context. The study focuses on developing their characteristics and receptive, productive, and interactive skills.

In this course, students study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts in various media. By examining communicative acts across literary form and textual type alongside appropriate secondary readings, students will investigate the nature of language and how it shapes and is influenced by identity and culture. The course offers a wide range of approaches to studying, such as literary theory, sociolinguistics, media studies and critical discourse analysis. 

 

French (SL)

Language B-French is an additional language learning course designed for students with previous learning of that language. 

 

The foci of these courses are language acquisition, intercultural understanding, and the development of language skills. This material will extend from everyday oral exchanges to literary texts and related cultures. The main objective of this course is to communicate with a range of interpersonal contexts and audiences.



Global Politics (SL and HL )

The global politics course explores fundamental political concepts, such as power, liberty, and equality, in various contexts and at multiple levels. It allows students to develop an understanding of the local, national, and global dimensions of political activity, as well as provides them with the opportunity to explore political issues affecting their own lives.

Global politics draws on various disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. It helps students understand abstract political concepts by grounding them in real-world examples and case studies and invites comparisons between them to ensure a transnational perspective.

Developing international mindedness and an awareness of multiple perspectives is at the heart of this course. It encourages dialogue and debate, nurturing the capacity to interpret competing and contestable claims.

Digital Society (SL and HL)

Digital society is an interdisciplinary course within the individual and society’s subject group. The course is designed for young people interested in exploring the impact and importance of digital systems and technologies in the contemporary world.

The curriculum focuses on a broad range of areas related to data, algorithms, media, AI, robotics and more. They explore life in a digital society, including social, cultural, and environmental contexts. In addition, HL students consider critical contemporary challenges and digital interventions.

Physics (HL and SL)

Despite the exciting and extraordinary development of ideas throughout the history of physics, observations remain essential to the very core of the subject. Besides helping us better understand the natural world, physics allows us to alter our environments.

Students delve deeper into the moral and ethical dilemmas and environmental implications of the work of physicists.

By studying physics, students become aware of how scientists work and communicate with each other. The course provides opportunities to develop design investigations, collect data, analyse results, and evaluate their findings. 



Chemistry (SL and HL)

“Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills.” (IB, 2006).
Students learn the chemical principles that underpin the physical environment and biological systems by studying quantitative chemistry, periodicity, kinetics, and other subjects. 

The course aims to enable students to develop a conceptual understanding and apply a body of knowledge, methods, tools, and techniques that characterise science. Students design and model solutions to local and global problems in a scientific context as part of their curriculum.

Biology (SL and HL)

The application of biology will have significant effects on society and individuals in the next half-century. Students understand the issues raised by research in areas such as the human genome project, genetic engineering, multiple drug resistance, environmental pollution, and the biochemical and neurological basis of consciousness. The course explores the living world using various approaches and techniques, such as laboratory-based simulations and databases.

Students develop the skills to work independently and collaborate with other schools in different regions to conduct scientific research.


Computer Science (SL and HL)

Computer science requires understanding the fundamental concepts of computational thinking and knowledge of how computers and other digital devices operate. 

The Diploma Programme computer science course is engaging, accessible, inspiring, and rigorous. It enables and empowers innovation, exploration, and the acquisition of further knowledge. Students view ethical issues through the lens of Computer Science and interact with cultures and society. The course develops computational thinking, which involves creating algorithms and expressing how theoretical and practical limitations affect the extent to which problems can be solved computationally. 

Environmental Systems and Societies (SL)

ESS is firmly grounded in a scientific exploration of environmental systems in their structure and function and the investigation of cultural and social interactions of societies with the environment. The interdisciplinary nature of this DP course requires a broad skill set from students, including the ability to perform research and investigations and participation in philosophical discussions.

The course promotes a holistic understanding of environmental issues. The curriculum encourages students to develop personal, community and global solutions. 

 

Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SL and HL

Sports, Exercise, and Health Science (SEHS) is an experimental science course combining academic study with practical and investigative skills. SEHS explores the science underpinning physical performance and provides the opportunity to apply these principles.

The course incorporates the disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition. Students cover core and option topics and conduct practical (experimental) investigations in laboratory and field settings. The course offers a deeper understanding of the issues related to sports in the 21st century and addresses the international dimension and ethics related to the individual and global context.  

SEHS prepares students interested in pursuing higher or further education related to sports, fitness, and health.

 

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) (HL and SL)

 

The AA course recognises the need for analytical expertise in a world where innovation is increasingly dependent on a deeper understanding of mathematics. The focus is on developing critical mathematical concepts comprehensibly, coherently, and rigorously developing critical mathematical concepts, achieved by a carefully balanced approach.

AA strongly emphasises the ability to construct, communicate and justify mathematical arguments and abstract problems. Students are encouraged to develop the skills needed to continue their mathematical growth in other learning environments. Throughout the course, students explore different ideas. 

Film (HL and SL)

The Film course aims to develop students as proficient interpreters and makers of film texts.  

Students acquire technical skills, reflective analysis, and critical thinking skills through studying and analysing film texts, multimedia technology, and practical exercises in film production.

They develop an artistic voice and learn how to express personal perspectives through film. The course emphasises the importance of intercultural dynamics and an appreciation of film development across time and culture. Students must formulate their intentions for a completed film and work collaboratively as a core production team to communicate on screen effectively. 


As discerning interpreters of film, they learn to appreciate and understand film as a complex art form.
